Studying astrophysics and astronomy is what got my best friend to wake up, and he in turn got me thinking. It's hard to feel significant against the scale of the cosmos.

(astronomy picture of the day) shows the sizes of 12 exo planets (compared to earth), that have been found to be in the habitable, liquid water 'goldilocks ' zone of their sun-like stars.. may be it is more than a 'world-wide brotherhood' and sad that we have to be the lucky ones with satan confined here.

Anyone see 12 Years A Slave?

it was tough to watch at times, and made me tear up a couple times.
it was a very well written well acted film with great cinematography, and was extremely moving.. i think it was a deserving winner..

It certainly was a great and very important movie. It forced back into the public conscious the evil of slavery, which is something most of America tries to ignore. It also made the injustice very intimate, instead of clinical like a history program.
That being said I liked Her more.

It's been a while since I've read or posted on JWN. I guess I have been trying to put this chapter of my life behind me.
As is usually the case, just when I'm having a good week, I get contact from a witness. What a way to ruin a week.
This was my last remaining friend in the Org telling me that we would no longer be friends, in a long and vague way. Aside from all the normal rhetoric this discussion prompts, I noticed one thing this time. In every single case where one of my close friends has severed contact with me, they always justify it with the phrase "we're on different paths now, and I don't see how we can remain close when we have different goals in life."
Now I know what this excuse actually means, I'm no longer a JW and am pursuing my education, so they are severing contact with me to advance in the borg. But out of the four times or so I've had this conversation, they have always used this justification almost verbattim.
It got me thinking, where did this idea come from? Since they all reproduced it independently, it has to be something that we had been taught to say, but I honestly cannot remember learning this line of reasoning in dealing with an exJW. Did anyone else hear this justification for why a friend was severing contact with you? I'm all ears...

marmot- same here. I either hid my music or scoured the internet for bands that didn't have overt anti-religious or overly violent themes. That was a struggle, being a JW and a metal fan! Now I listen to whatever blasphemy I please lol
I agree with you as well, going to my first metal concert was a watershed moment.

When I first was kicked out of my house, it was a born again family that kept me off the streets. So while I disagree with their view of the universe, I do respect their hospitality and kindness.
